VERSIONE ITALIANA

Alessandro Lilli

With the release of a surprisingly good debut album titled “Rest in sleaze”, Crashdiet proved to be one of the best newcomers in 2005. Let’ s take a deeper insight by interviewing Martin Sweet.

Hey guys, are you aware Crashdiet released one of the best 100% grunge-free, pure rock' n roll albums of this decade? What' s the best response you happened to read about "Rest in sleaze" so far?
We´ve got quite a lot of good response from major newzpapers in Sweden..
The best are the ones that hate us for keeping our hair in shape and writing really crappy song *laughs*
.

Would you please introduce us the band members, with a short bio of the band?
Well, Dave Lepard (lead vox) is the only original member. He formed the band in 2000. They struggled for about two years until they broke up. Then in like januari 2003 the band reformed with the current lineup and got signed a year later. We released our album on august 24 - 2005.

Why this name: Crashdiet?
No one really knows. Dave is said to have come up with the name at his peak of drunkness.

If i should mention a couple of terms of reference for your music i' d say the early Shotgun Messiah and Tigertailz. What are your real musical influences?
I began listening to shotgun only recently so they arent an inspiration on "rest in sleaze" I would say: Skid Row, Guns n Roses, KISS, W.a.s.p and Wrathchild. Tigertailz influenced our hair ;-)

Besides a selftitled 2003 EP, seems like you have tons of further tracks that do rock as the ones you released on your debut cd... Will these tunes see the light of day as well?
They sure will. We´re planning on releasing an 10inch vinyl EP with some of the old stuff.
The rest will probobly end up on upcoming Albums.

How hard was is to get a deal with such a major as Universal records? Are you satisfied with the support your label is giving to you?
It´s hard to get signed at all these days. We sent our music to tons of small lables but with no luck.
Universal actually discovered us on the street before they heard our music.

You' re paying a particular attention to videoclips, and have already shot a few. Do you think there is an adeguate space for them on music networks?
We had a lot of airplay with our first videos but they unfotunately dont last for long on main stream TV..
After a few week they end up no midnight rock shows... There isn’t a lot of rock n roll videos in the daytime and that really sucks.. but the videos have helped us a lot.

How were Crashdiet recruited for those commercials regarding 3hg and Ericsson?
We were just really lucky. By chance, some guy from Ericsson contacted our managers colleague, asking for a cool rockband. two weeks later we ended up in Malaysia, shooting the commercial.

Any project about a regular dvd?
We´ve talked about it, but we feel it´s to early on to do it.

Some of the major swedish rock acts, i mean Europe and Alien, came back with a brand new release during 2005. A sincere opinion about their albums: could them have been better?
I kinda liked the new Europe material at first, but it didnt last for long. There great as a live act but they really should do songs more similar to the old albums.
I actually had Alien lead guitarist: Tony borg as a guitar-teacher for a year. He´s a really cool dude!
I havent heard the new Alien album, but I kinda like some of the old songs.

Sex, alchool and rock' n roll: if you had to necessarily give one up, which would you rinounce to?
Well some day you´ll have to give up alcohol anyway so I choose that one.

You' re doing a huge live activity in Scandinavia, and you' re lately touring with Zan Clan. What about the forthcoming Sweden Rock festival? Any chance to see you onstage?
We´ll probably we doing tons of festivals this summer and hopefully Sweden Rock too.

What would the ultimate live appearance be in your dreams?
Any outdoor stadium during the sunset.

How many of your dreams as musicians have already come true so far, and which ones do you still wish to make concrete?
Well, making and releasing an album is a dream cometrue. Also shooting videos for it.
Now we have a goal to become huge!

How many chances to have "Rest in sleaze" voted as best 2005 release? I do think it might seriously aim for such an award!!!
You can always hope. But an award doesnt mean that much to us. What matters is the people who love the album.

Slam! readers are the perfect public for a band as Crashdiet: any special promise for them?
We´re coming to Italy this year I can promise that!
