Hi Billy, what’s up? I’ve
finally got your album… why did it take so long
to be released?
Billy: Well, there are a few reasons
for this question !! first off we wanted to make a
big arena rock album loaded with great songs which
takes time. Secondly we were doing everything ourselves,
meaning time & money. So unfortunatly things took
a bit longer due to this. Thirdly, our drummer quit
right after returning from our 3rd European tour In
2003. So on top of getting a new album written &
recorded at the same time we were out to find a new
member yet again !! To keep things moving ahead we
actually played to a click track/drum machine for
nearly a year untill our friend Johnny Cruz said he
would help us out and play the drum parts for the
album.
This Is where
things really started to come together as far as getting
the songs finished & the album done. After we
were done with pre-production we headed down to good
ol' LA to start recording the album at the Sandbox
with producer Rick Parker. We recorded then mixed
It In a few stages from the months of February-June
of 2004. After that was all said & done we played
a few local shows with Johnny on drums then Paul Scavuzzo
joined In late 2004.
Now that
we were back up & running as a band we played
a few SF & LA shows, one which was supporting
the New York Dolls @ The Fillmore Auditorium. We then
headed overseas for a two week tour of Europe In January
2005 to support the double cd released on 'People
Like You Records' which was a compilation of old material.
When we returned home we played a show In Hollywood
the following month for Liquor & Poker/Cetury
Media Records who loved the new album. The next day
we met with the president who then offered us a deal
on the spot !! After going through all the legal bull-shit
the album finally got the release date this past April.
I really like that album and
I reckon your sound has become more melodic than before.
Was it planned or just a normal evolution of the American
Heartbreak sound?
American Heartbreak has always been about riffs &
melodies, good catchy songs. For this one we wanted
to take It further and write the best album we could
as well as It being a big arena rock record. So yeah
It's a bit of an evolution, but much more of a planned
& very focused dirrection which we have never
done before. I feel this Is the album AH has always
wanted to record but just never quite did with our
past releases. This album sounds like an album, For
me personaly our past releases sound like just a bunch
of unfinished songs we recorded then released.
How was it working with Rick
Parker and how much it did impact the final
outcome of the CD?
Rick Parker Is awsome to work with,
being a long time friend also helped put that good
energy into the recording as well. Rick Is very talented
period ! He's great at getting everything to sound
perfect yet still have that nice Rock N' Roll edge.
As for the impact/final outcome, yes Rick had a lot
to do with It.
I thought the producer should
be John Purdell…
Originally John Purdell was going
to do the album, Sadly John was struck by prostate
cancer & passed away In 2004.
Oh, oh : ( sorry.... "Unhappily
Ever After" is about hating your own girlfriend,
while the last track is called "Bitch".
Why such an aversion towards women?
I don't write the lyrics but that's
been the thing for AH from the start, love hate relationships.
In what occasion you did suffer
most for love?
I have no idea??
"The Last Of the Superheroes"
is your personal tribute to your 70’s idols
and you name Kiss, Aerosmith,
Cheap Trick, Rolling Stones
among them. What do you think of the "accident"
occurred to Keith Richard? Have you
ever climbed a palm to get a coconut? Seriously, what’s
the worst crap thing you have ever done in music?
That Is one crazy story about
Keith !!! I'm not much for coconuts so I don't think
I'll ever be climbing a tree for one !!! Hmmm the
worst thing I've ever done ???? not sure about that???
In the CD pix you’re wearing
a Kiss and a Aerosmith
t-shirt...is there a clothing or an object you love
in particular and you will never get rid of?
Were all fans of this stuff, as
for never getting rid of object/material item, that
would be my Gretsch White Falcon guitar.
"Goodnight Goodbye"
is missing in the CD, why didn’t you include
it?
We worked on about 16 songs for this album then cut
It down to 13 when It came time to record. Goodnight
Goodbye was on the first list but It just never came
together like the album tracks so we dropped It along
with two others . I'm sure we will work on It for
the next album & see what comes of It ??? then
maybe not ??
Last time you told us about Hanoi
Rocks, Angela McCoy, atc…why don’t
you try and cheer up the SLAM! readers with some more
gossip or funny story on the rockstar you have met?
Ahhh the good ol' days!!! well as for stories?? I
remember meeting Steven Tyler at
this goth type club In San Francisco back In 1994
& some wacky girl came up to him with a whip &
said hit me with this ???? so Steven took It and gave
her a few wacks over her ass!! Priceless memory!!!
In 2004 you supported New
York Dolls, memories and impressions on that
show?
First off to support the New
York Dolls was just AWSOME !! secondly my
old bass player Sami Yaffa had just
joined the band. It was the first time we both shared
a stage together In 14 years !! so for me that was
pretty cool. And to top off we opened for a legendary
band that we all love & were influenced by ! It
dosen't get any better than that.
Talking of gigs, you toured with
many bands, tell the first thing coming to your mind
about:
Backyard Babies: Dregen
Crash Kelly: Thin
Lizzy
The Donnas: Alison
Buckcherry: Rock
!
Warrant: No comment
Cinderella: underrated
Scorpions: Love
Drive
Sebastian Bach: Tall
L.A. Guns: Good
friends
Last year you wrote me that
JetBoy were about to make a re-union. What
happened then? Any chance to see them together again?
Yup, Jetboy reunited for the first time in over 14
years ! We were offered to headline the release party
@ The Key Club In Los Angeles for the 'Hollywood Rocks'
Cd box set which came out last year on Cleopatra/Deadline
Records and the timing was just right. The whole thing
went so well we talked about keeping It going which
none of us expected to do. We just did two more shows
this year (American Heartbreak played on the SF date
this late April) which went great as well. Right now
I'm focusing on AH ! Jetboy will do more sometime
soon though. We are going to release a Cd/DVD by next
year & see what comes of that. Now that we got
back together and played those old songs It's much
easier to pull together & do a again, so will
see where It goes ???
Recently Black Halos
went playing to Italy. How are things going with Adam
Becvare and why did he quit the band?
Hmmm good question ?? why did
Adam quit ?? Personaly I think Adam just wanted to
re-form his old band the Lust Killers which Is what
he did right after leaving AH. I gotta say one thing,
If It was not for AH Adam would not have found the
members for LK, landed the gig with the re-united
Lords nor the Black Halos ! those
are friends he met & connections he made while
playing In AH. What I don't get Is he never gives
us any credit or mention about ever playing with AH
? which I don't understand ??? No biggie though. Were
still good friends & keep In touch.... we love
Adam X !!
I’ve been in contact with
Erik from the time 'Postcards From Hell' was out.
Where is he now? I remember he was really nice and
kind…
Erik & I go back a long, long
time, he's like a brother to me. He had issues with
Lance which lead him to make a decision & that
was to leave the band right after we returned from
our third European tour In 2003. As the band carried
on Erik & I keept In touch, as far as I know he's
doing good and living his life.
I know you’re a daily user
of Ebay and Myspace; what’s the auction more
satisfying and how useful is a site like Myspace for
a rock’n’roll band?
Yeah I love ebay !!! I started
my buisness on there but don't use It as much now.
As for myspace I think It helps out big time for any
band or whatever you do. It's the ultimate networking
tool which get's your name out there to help promote
whatever you want, the internet rules !!
Ok Billy, that’s all...one
more thing… that "Moreno" named in
the credits, is this me???
Yes this is YOU !!! you have been
a big supporter of AH & we wanted to let you know
that you ROCK!
Uahaaa, Thank youuuuuuuuuuuu!!!
the last lines are for you, to say goodbye to the
Slam! readers.
To all the slam readers !! Moreno
Rocks & so does Slam !! AH look forward to seeing
all our rock n' roll friends In Italy very soon !!
support your Rock N' Roll & pick up the new AH
cd !!
