Alessandro Lilli

Just back from his recent european live appearances at the Firefest, James Christian, the golden voice of class rockers House of Lords, accepted to answer our questions concerning the past, present and future of his glorious musical career.

You’ ve regularly fronted House of Lords as headliners in the recent Firefest dates in England and Greece despite some physical trouble. As far as I know, the band hadn’ t been playing live for a long while, but you got back onstage to set the fest...on fire. Were you satisfied with the overall
performances of House od Lords?
I was very satisfied with the performance in both Nottingham and Greece. The crowd was great at
both places. Although we only had three rehearsals, it all came back to us very quickly.

British fans are got used to hard rock gigs, but what can you tell us about the greek ones? Did Firefest meet a good response out there too?
The fans in greece are awesome. They really appreciate their music there. They treated us very well and I would go back there anytime.

Did the band happen to play any further europen dates before flying back to USA?
No we only played two dates. I had to get back home to finish a few projects that I am doing.

The split from Gregg Giuffria was quite clamorous. What did happen, and what are his relations with his former bandmates now? As far as I know, Gregg recently experienced an hurricane as well, as sadly happened to you, and his new project concerning a Casinò in Biloxi, Mississippi was hugely damaged.
Gregg and I are working on a New HOL CD. We are in contact all the time and our relationship is good. He is now trying to put back the pieces of his Casino in Mississippi.

How much did his departure influence the change of music style on “The power and the myth”?
The Power and The Myth was a CD that was mainly constructed by Lanny & Chuck. I only was given the tracks to sing. The new CD will be more in the lines of traditional HOL.

Are you satisfied with that album, and what kind of musical direction will House of Lords follow on the new release scheduled for 2006?
The new CD will blow you away. It is our best work. I am very proud of this new CD.

You recently appeared in a delicious duet with your wife Robin Beck on a song included in the brand new Radioactive album “Taken”, a true “all stars parade” released by the great Tommy Denander. Tommy admitted he neither knew at first that Robin and you were married!!! Did you ever sing with Robin before?
Robin has done background work for me in the past, but we never did a duet. We are going to do a killer duet on my solo CD.

With so many wonderful ballads in your repertory, which was the “ace” you played to make Robin fall at your feets? Or it’ s maybe just the opposite???
Our favorite ballad is “Love Don’t Lie”

You both recently released highly acclaimed solo projects (“Meet the man” and “Do you miss me?”). How do you share this professional activity? Is there a “positive competition” between you or just a tender reciprocal support?
Really there is no competition. We support each other on every project. We want to make a good example for our daughter when she gets into the music business.

Any music projects in common with Robin for the next future?
Robin is doing a greatest hits CD and also a dvd which will come out in january.

One personal curiosity: once I read somewhere that Robin Beck happened to share a song with the Italian singer Pupo, who actually leads a TV show every evening on our national newtork. When did it happen?
That happened in 2000 I believe. She sang a duet called “Non un addio” I think thats how you spell it?

I read that House of Lords are planning the release of a dvd. Can you give us some anticipation about its contents?
The DVD will have all of the great videos we did as well as Live TV and Interviews with the band.
It is a great collection.

I know you’ re close friends with your bandmate bass player Chuch Wright, who’ s also a great artwork designer.
Yes Chuck does some great artwork. He has a passion for it.

How much important was this friendship in your musical career?
Chuck and I have remained friends for years. We always got along great on tour

I also read in your biography that you joined Andy Damien in the band which was going to become the highly acclaimed Eyes, but seems like it wasn’ t a great experience for you. What can you tell us about those days?
It’ s not that it was not a great experience, it was just not the band that I thought I would make it with. Aldy was very determined but the music was just not that great.

Manic Eden, despite the great names involved in the band, released an album which included songs that simply don’ t rock, in my humble opinion. What went wrong with that project?
Manic Eden, could have been another Monster Group. The potential was there. The problem was that there was not enough interaction between the band members to contribute songs and Lyrics. I just can’t be a singer in a band. I write and i have many ideas, none of them were used. This CD should have been called “The Adrian Vandenberg Project”

Your solo career proved to be by far more satisfactory. “Rude awakening” was an excellent album , although I suppose its title was concerned with the change in music industry in the early nineties. The grunge “hurricane” and “Wilma”: which of them was the more devastating, in your opinion?
Grunge was much more devastating. It lasted much longer than any hurricane and it also deprived younger music fans from really great music. Grunge Music is an angry type of music that really has not musical fiber. You can take a band and put them on instruments for a few weeks and you have a potential hit band. When we were growing up we had to pay major dues and no-one got through the cracks. If you did not have talent, you did not get a record deal. Those were great days when great musicians were born. Today you find musicians and singers discovering this for the first time.

Your latest brilliant effort is “Meet the man”. Which release was more pleasant for you to record? And which one do you think is more representative of your truest music attitude?
I love “Meet The Man” but I have a close passion for “Rude Awakening” As a matter of fact, ”Rude Awakewning” could have been the Manic Eden CD but Adrian rejected every song.

The best song you ever performed?
Can’t Find My Way Home

Did the House of Lords tracklist in the Firefest gigs include any outtake from your solo albums?
No, the guys did not want to do any of my solo stuff. I do understand.

Is there something you’ d like to say to all your fans out there?
I want to say thank you for sticking with us all these years. We love playing for our fans and we hope to be back with a new CD in 2006.
