Your cd is a great melodic rock
album. You mix modern sounds with classic attitude.
can you tell me something about the songwriting and
lyrics?
Dean: Well, Marco
wrote the bulk of the material and I contributed several
tunes for consideration, as well. We selected one
of mine for this effort, with the others being shelved
for future use, as they didn't quite fit into the
style of the rest of the record. Could there be a
"solo" disc from me in the near future?
We'll see...hahaha. We did use an outside writer for
the ballad, "Leap Of Faith", a tune I really
dig,and Marco sounds great on it. All of the songwriters
involved have a history or influence that dates back
into the 80's, so there's that flavor in the tunes.
Marco: The way I normaly
right is with an acoustic, easy to full around, there’
s acoustics guitars in every corner of my house :
) I like to bring a little of that 70’s QUEEN
and the 80”s approach of Robert “Mutt”
Lange. With BIG vocals and guitars all around the
mix. I have a good idea of how’s the final mix
should sound, so I demo in my home studio. Then I give
it to the guys and they add their fine touch. It works.
I guess because we are so into the kind of music we
play, that when we jam the songs the sounds just come
right in place smoothly.
Have you any point of reference
in rock scene?
Marco: I love bands like Def Leppard,
Journey, Harem Scarem as well as some of the progessive
bands like Venturia ;-)
Dean: Again, you are
what you eat so there's a trait of producing songs
that have hooks and singability in them. As Marco
and myself are guitarists, we put guitar solos on
everything, anywhere we can! Hahahaha! It's wacky
to me to be afraid of playing solos in each cut on
the record, though it's not norm for most bands, nowadays.
If it's good playing and adds to the song itself then
it deserves to be there-'nuff said! We'd never solo
just to solo...
What about the cd cover art?
Dean: John Kivel worked with Blackseed
Designs, they did that stuff and sent us samples along
the way, asking for opinions/thoughts. As a whole
we dug it all, so we didn't really need to get involved
that much. It does have that Rush "Permanent
Waves" feel to it, which I think is cool but
haven't a clue as to what it's really about! Cool
is cool...
Nowadays how is the rock scene
in USA?
Marco: To be honest, I don’t
listen to radio, or watch VH1 and MTV. Here and there
I hear some good new bands in some Jukebox. As far
as melodic rock/metal, our favorite bands seems to
be hitting the road more and more, WITH BIG BALLS!!!!
ROCLAHOMA made to some major papers and magazines
exposure. And so did MELODICK ROCK FEST. There’s
a demand and I guess the bands (Old or new) out there
playing are delivering.
Dean: As always there
are bad & good bands peddling their wares to the
masses.
Hopefully, we're part of the latter. It's no secret
that the record companies, as a whole, as scrabbling
to find ways to make money, with downloading being
as rampant as it is. As a result they aren't as loose
with their funds as they were 10 years ago, which
means it's tougher than ever trying to get their interest
in your band. Do we want eveyone in the country do
know who we are? Of course! John's got connections
that he's made through prior releases on his label,
getting stuff around the world, which is helpful to
our effort, to be sure.
But the rock scene in the USA is still
a niche market-quite frankly, all styles of music
have turned into the same. It wasn't always like this,
but has become so through the recent years. The good
news? I also teach guitar when I have the time, and
see kids that are 13 years old who love "classic"
rock, like Zeppelin, AC/DC, Kiss. That shows me the
if you make a good product, you'll never have to apologize
for it. Do I miss the 80's? Yes, but simply because
it was a good time all the way around. One upside
right now: I don't need to spend my hard earned dough
on hairspray anymore! In a nutshell: rock music is
doing fine, where it exists...the cycle keeps coming
'round.
Can this kind of music return to be a reference for
the music biz in your opinion?
Marco: I don’t know, I haven’t
seing any major change on the music industry in years,
the bands are starting to repeat themselves. But you
see, Bon Jovi can have a song on ZROCK radio in NY,
but sells out 10 nights in a New Jersey stadium just
a few miles from Manhattan. So who the hell knows
: )
Dean:
I don't get into the "doom and gloom" of
a lot of the newer bands. I enjoy life, so I want
music that reflects that. I do still listen to my
Iron Maiden & Judas Preist CD's-I love that stuff!
But I also dig the new Feist
tune, "1234"...weird, eh? I want to feel
good, period. While Nirvana wrote some great stuff,
I never bought into the depressing nature of it all-depression
sucks, now doesn't it? Enjoy music-it's audio sunshine
(I think that I just came up with an album title!).
How is to work with Kivel records?
Marco: They are
hands on. Totally devoted to Melodic Rock.
Dean: John's (Kivel
Records) has been good to work with, though we've
bumped noggins a couple of times, debating which way
to take something. That's a natural thing, not a negative
thing and I look forward to the things to come.
What about the near future?
Marco: Try to book more shows to
promote our CD. There’s plenty material ready
for the studio.
Dean: We've talked
about starting the new GOODBYE THRILL effort in March,
which may only be the writing process... There's talk
of doing a DVD release with some acoustic stuff, interviews,
behinds the scenes & live footage, ect. We always
dream big, lofty ideas and do our best to make them
materialize. Our thoughts are as to what would we,
as fans of the band/music, like to see?
That's our perspective on it. Of course we want to
do lots more shows, and kick butts from NY to CA...
and BEYOND!!!!!
I read about a dvd release of
an acoustic session, is it right?
Marco: We just played a acoustic
show for the people invited to the GBT cd release
party.I think we sounded good that night and I’m
glad we have that on video. There are plans for a
DVD release of the night along with other band footage/
I saw you in Southbend and you
have a great live attitude. what can you tell me about
that experience.
Marco: Although Thrill is a new band,
we all share a big baggage of life gigs.
M.R. fest was our first show, and I was looking forward
to play those tunes with the guys on that particular
stage. We were all excited to be there among such
great talented people.
Dean: Going back to
a previous answer, music should be fun. Part of performing
is to show the audience that you're having a blast
and they should be doing the same. A smile goes a
long way... Not staring at your feet or guitar the
whole time should be musically law... and STRICTLY
enforced... hahaha! The INDY show was fabulous and
was our very 1st show! The crew were accommodating
(thanks Dave-stage manager extraordinare!) and the
other bands were super. Everyone got along fab and
that's what makes a "festival" type show
run smooth and a
pleasure to do (they aren't always such the case).
The Marti Peters Group came all the
way from Denmark to do this show, but had to leave
their guitars/amps at home, due to our work permit
codes. As a result, we let them use ours, which was
our pleasure to do so-they are great guys and highly
recommend that your readers check them out. As a fanboy
myself, I was loving life hanging out with the guys
from Night Ranger, Nelson, Slaughter, Mr. Big, Rainbow
& Survivor-all were super cool! We've got video
from the show and tons of pix, thanks to new
friends that I made at the event-I still talk with
several of them, actually!
What about your live show?
Marco: It’s
high energy, we all love playing live. You have penty
to see if you are in our show, having Dario and Dean
on each side of the stage, we keep your eyes busy
while we rock some tunes.
Dean: It's pretty
high energy, just like the music. I record albums
so that I can perform live, I must admit. Live is
the fun part-the studio is enjoyable, especially when
you have the right engineer. I had David Powers with
me this time, who's an excellent guitarist, and he
made my life as easy as possible. I sure that while
people enjoy the studio effort, it's the live show
that brings the music across the best and gives them
a visual memory that they can relate to down the road...
Do you think it will be possible
to see you in Europe?
Dean: There is
talk of Spain, early next year...so we'll see...
Marco: There’s
some talk about, and I think it should take place
sometime early 2008, most likely Spain. I’ll
be playing a few acoustic shows in Switzerland where
i will be playing a bunch of THRILL tunes.
What are you listening now in
your mp3 player or in your cd car?
